LWPTSA Council Advocacy Update: Legislative Progress for Washington’s Public Schools

This spring, public education advocates across Washington saw meaningful progress in Olympia. On May 20, Governor Ferguson signed into law several key education bills that reflect the ongoing efforts of communities, educators and parent leaders like you. While much work remains to ensure every district is fully and equitably funded, this year’s wins are a powerful reminder of what advocacy can achieve.

Support for Districts Under Financial Stress

Senate Bill 5412 allows school districts facing binding financial conditions to sell surplus property to restore their financial stability. This new flexibility can help struggling districts avoid deeper cuts and recover more quickly. While not every district is in this position, having such tools in place protects students and classrooms across the state from the long-term consequences of structural deficits.

Increased Local Levy Capacity

House Bill 2049 increases the amount school districts can collect through local levies by raising the per-student cap starting in 2026. For districts such as Lake Washington School District, where voters have shown strong support for education, this change means communities will have greater power to fund the programs, staffing and services our students need.

A Win for Advocacy—And a Call to Keep Going

These legislative victories show that our voices matter. From local PTAs to statewide coalitions, parent and community advocates helped shape a legislative agenda that responds to the financial realities facing public education. At the same time, we know these bills are only a step toward a more stable and equitable funding system for all Washington state students.

As we celebrate these milestones, we remain committed to the work ahead—ensuring every child in every district has access to a fully funded, high-quality public education.

Thank you for being part of this advocacy journey.
