LWPTSA Council was proud to present one of two You Rock! awards at our June 2024 membership meeting to Rosa Parks Elementary PTSA in recognition of their unique after-school “Sewing 101” program!
This sewing enrichment program, led entirely by parent volunteers, taught students a valuable life skill, providing them with an opportunity to develop fine-motor skills while setting their creativity free. The hands-on learning experience also served as a practical application of mathematical concepts and fostered critical thinking.
In summer 2023, Rosa Parks parent volunteer Ekaterina “Kate” Korotkova brought to the PTSA a carefully crafted curriculum to teach elementary students the basics of sewing with exciting yet simple projects that could be completed within one hour. Rosa Parks PTSA sponsored the program with a successful initial run in the fall of 2023, led by Kate and supported by other fantastic parent volunteers. The program’s popularity led to its return in the spring and was fully booked within minutes of its registration launch!
Students learned various stitches as well as gained experience sewing buttons and zippers by working on a range of fun projects. Glimpse a sampling of their handiwork—ladybug (with button eyes), zippered bag, drawstring bag, Christmas stocking and eye mask—in the photo below!
As a bonus, thanks in part to Sewing 101, it seams seems that the PTSA even saw a membership boost. Congratulations, Rosa Parks PTSA! You rock! Learn more about LWPTSA Council’s You Rock! awards.
